Five African-American members of the Indianapolis City-County Council appeared on Afternoons with Amos to express their opposition to Mayor Greg Ballard’s current proposal to sell the Indianapolis Water Company to Citizens Energy Group and borrow $170 million for city government spending that would be paid for by Water Company customers.

Councilmen Monroe Gray, Vernon Brown, William Oliver, Paul Bateman and Jose Evans expressed their strong opposition to Mayor Ballard’s plans. They said that plans to spend $425 million on streets and sidewalks and other public works, while good, would be paid for in higher water rates. They urged the Mayor and Council Republicans to create a plan that is “honest” with taxpayers and Water Company customers.
