Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Eugene White appeared on Afternoons with Amos with IPS’ reaction to looming state intervention for five IPS high schools and one IPS middle school. Dr. White blasted state education officials for not providing IPS a chance to see and review their data. White pointed out errors and inconsistencies in how the state made their data calculations that led to their decision.
Labeled by the Indiana Department of Education as “F” or Failing Schools for the sixth straight year were Arlington, Broad Ripple, Howe, Washington and Manual High Schools and Emma Donnan Middle School. Under state law, that means the State can intervene and order remedial action that could include the closure of the school or having another organization, not IPS, operate the school.
The State announced three companies, including EdPower an Indianapolis-based, Black-owned/managed operator of Charles Tindley Charter school, are the companies that may run schools the state takes over. EdPower (Chas Tindley), Edison Schools and Charter Schools USA are the vendors chosen potential Turnaround School Operators by the Indiana Department of Education.
Northwest High School, that had been on Academic Probation for five straight years, made enough progress to be taken off probation and classified as having made “Academic Progress”.
