Republican Bob Turner defeated Democrat Assemblyman David Weprin in a special election for former Rep. Anthony Weiner’s congressional seat yesterday in New York.

Surprisingly, many voters saw the election as referendum on President Obama rather than an occasion to replace Rep. Wiener, who resigned in june after controversial pictures of him surfaced.

“I said to myself, ‘We need to turn this election into a referendum [on Obama]. And we did!’ ’’ gushed former Mayor Ed Koch, the first prominent Democrat to cross party lines for Turner.
