MIREBALAIS, Haiti – Former U.S. President Bill Clinton is urging officials to stem a cholera outbreak that has killed more than 7,000 people in Haiti since it was introduced to the country by a U.N. peacekeeper.
Clinton made the remarks Wednesday as he toured a new hospital in Haiti in his role as U.N. special envoy to the impoverished Caribbean country. He said the soldier may not have known he was carrying the bacteria.
Studies have showed that U.N. peacekeepers from Nepal likely introduced the disease to Haiti.
An international panel appointed by the United Nations blamed the outbreak on bad sanitation.
Haiti has the world’s highest cholera rate. The disease has sickened more than 526,000 others.
