Saying that Indiana’s public schools are spending “too much time teaching to the test” and not time teaching real knowledge to students, Glenda Ritz, Democratic candidate for Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction appeared on Afternoons with Amos, in her first live media interview, with a forceful agenda for Indiana’s schools. Ritz, a longtime teacher in Washington Township, is running against incumbent Republican Dr. Tony Bennett. Ritz blasted the amount of testing Indiana’s students must take. She was particularly critical of the new third grade IRead test. A test she feels along with other standardized tests aren’t helping students learn. Instead these are tests just to provide the data for the state.  Ritz also charged the state spends little to provide continuing education for classroom teachers. She supports charter schools but is wary of how the state has handled them and how state takeovers of poor performing schools have been handled.
