Before you know it, the tax filing deadline will be here. So have you filed your taxes yet? If you have not, here are some great tips that ensure you get the most from your filing experience!

1. If your income was less than $49,000 a year, the IRS has an assistance program where certified volunteers can help you fill out your taxes. Chances are, your city or state has offices or organizations that will assist you in filing your taxes and in many cases, there is very little to no fee! Here in Houston, Texas, the United Way of Greater Houston has tax assistance. CLICK HERE to get more information. Also the Neighborhood Centers here in Houston offer free tax filing assistance. Check income guidelines and CLICK HERE to find a location near you!

2. If you are elderly or know someone who is, you(or that elderly loved one) can receive assistance from the IRS. CLICK HERE to be routed to the IRS and obtain more information.

3. If you are one of the many Americans who will choose to file electronically, you can do so in the comfort of your home computer. It is a matter of typing the information on your end of the year employment forms and punching in the numbers. If you do make a mistake, many e-filing software and programs can pick out the mistake for you and help you correct it for a flawless tax filing and return experience!

4. Finally… you have gotten your refund! But think of it as money you earned and overpaid the government. It is not necessarily a “bonus” . So you may want to consider using your refund to pay old debts, and wiping the slate clean!
