In her first extended media interview since she shocked the education world, especially education reformers, with her upset victory over Dr. Tony Bennett as Indiana’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, Glenda Ritz talked about her vision, goals and plans for Indiana’s Public Schools and students.  Appearing on Afternoons with Amos, Ritz talked with Amos and listeners about her plans for the state’s public schools.  Glenda Ritz talked extensively about having regional staff out in the state working with schools and school districts on improving education.  Ritz said she wasn’t in favor of the state “taking over” schools in trouble, but feels the state should identify troubled schools earlier and work closely with them to improve.  Ritz said she’s talked to Governor-elect Mike Pence and there’s common ground on Pence and Ritz’ desire to improve vocational education and career skills for Hoosiers students. Ritz criticized the current A-F grading system for schools and districts and said that would change. Ritz’ opponents have said she’s against the Common Core standards, but in her interview she explained to listeners the standards, what Indiana had agreed to and that she’s in favor of standards that work and help educate Indiana students. Ritz said she’s in favor of charter schools, especially locally controlled ones, not ones run by corporations.  Ritz agrees that children should be able to read by Third Grade, but she thinks the IRead pass/fail test isn’t the way to measure reading skills of students.
