In an historic first time broadcast, AM1310 TheLight WTLC and Afternoons with Amos broadcast live from inside an Indianapolis Police Station. The program broadcast live from the Department of Public Safety’s new Regional Operations Center which is located in the old Eastgate Shopping Center.  The facility was opened just before last year’s Super Bowl and paid for largely with Federal dollars.  The center also houses IMPD’s East District which comprises roughly an area of Washington Street and 30th/34th/46th Streets to the Hancock County line.  Speaking with Amos for the full two hours was new IMPD Chief Rick Hite, East District Commander Major James Waters. Also joining the conversation was veteran IMPD officer Lt. John Walton, City-County Councilman Steve Talley who heads IMPD’s Crime Watch efforts and IMPD Chaplain Elder David Coatie.  Chief Hite, Major Walters and the other guests talked frankly about IMPD’s efforts to fight crime citywide. Everything from reducing homicides and aggravated assaults, robberies, young adult violence, the problems with teens downtown and in Broad Ripple.  Subjects also included crime watch, relationships betwen officers and the community, how IMPD follows up with crime victims and much more.  Chief Hite pledged that he wants IMPD to be more open and visible and transparent with the community.  And he’s asking for the community to be open and transparent with his officers in helping them fight crime in the neighborhoods.  Hear the full program from inside IMPD.
