Afternoons with Amos ended its ninth year on AM1310 The Light and began its Tenth Season in style. The program broadcast live from Maxine’s Chicken & Waffles, the population Black-owned downtown soul food restaurant at Ohio and East Streets. Besides talking with listeners on a wide range of subjects, which has been the success of the program since it began February 2, 2004, the program covered some serious topics. Deputy Mayor for Education Jason Kloth stopped by to explain why Mayor Greg Ballard was petitioning the State Board of Education to allow the City to gain oversight of the four IPS schools the State of Indiana took over this past July. The four schools, Manual, Howe and Arlington High schools and Emma Donnan Middle Schools will now be supervised by the Mayor’s Charter Schools Office. Deputy Mayor Kloth explained why the city and state was taking this action. Kloth was joined by Marcus Robinson, CEO of EdPower which operates the Charles Tindley Charter Schools and Arlington High School. Robinson said the change would have no impact on the education his organization is providing Arlington students. Also, in a surprise appearance exercise and fitness guru Donna Richardson visited Maxine’s and the broadcast. Donna talked about the importance of fitness among the African-Americans. And how easy it was to do exercise and get fit even in one’s house or apartment. Richardson even kidded Amos about his “sampling” Maxine’s Valentine’s Day special entree of Beef Stroganoff and Rice with a great baked potato.
