Councilman Jose Evans
Currently there are twenty-nine charter school located within Indianapolis/Marion County. Twenty-five operated by the Mayor of Indianapolis, three others chartered by Ball State University and one by the new Indiana State Charter School Board. Over the next several years as many as 20 to 30 more charters could open. Some are saying that with public school enrollment in Indianapolis showing a decline for the first time in decades, partially due to the new school voucher program, its time to slow down the growth of charters. Or at least call a moratorium on new charters. A group asking that and more information on whether charter schools are really serving the ends of Indianapolis students has asked the City-County Council and the Mayor’s Chatter School Office just that. Appearing on Afternoons with Amos, representatives of the group made their chase for a halt in new charter schools. City-County Councilman Jose Evans is leading the effort. He was joined by educational activist John Loflin and NAACP Member Carole Craig in discussing this critical issue with Amos and listeners. Click the Link to Hear Full Interview.
