Lent, a forty day liturgical season that come directly before Easter in the Christian calendar, begins today. The beginning of lent is marked on Ash Wednesday for Western Christian churches. Roman Catholic, Anglican, along with some other churches hold special services which see worshippers marked on the forehead with ashes as a symbol of death, and repentance. The ashes are made from the burning of palm crosses from the previous Palm Sunday. The observation of the forty days of Lent is a representation of Jesus Christ’s withdrawal into the desert for forty days and is marked by fasting from both food and festivities.
