Two major construction projects may slow you down today if you commute from the north side.

Those who drive this area are certainly used to construction slow-downs.

Today, travel is restricted to one lane in both directions of Interstate 69 as workers remove the old bridge and finish construction on a new entrance ramp from 116th Street.

Much of the work happens overnight and ends  by 5:00 a.m. each day. However, the bridge will maintain single-lane traffic for worker safety.

On US 31 in Westfield, contractors will be preparing for construction of a new exit ramp between 156th Street and 146th Street this morning.

INDOT reminds you to watch for the signs, and the workers. ” Whenever you’re implementing improvements on an area like that is already so heavily congested,” said Nathan Riggs of INDOT, “it’s difficult to do that without having some sort of impact on traffic.”

Riggs said INDOT tries to find a balance by having as little impact as possible, while trying to get those improvements done as quickly as possible. All of the work at that interchange as well as the added travel lanes should be done by the end of this year.

I-69 and SR 37 is an $18-million project expected to complete all the northbound improvements by the start of summer.  INDOT will then begin work on the southbound lanes.

“Whenever possible. we do lane widening in order to shift traffic over like US 31 so that we can have two lanes in each direction while we’re upgrading those southbound lanes,” Riggs said. “So we do what we can to minimize the impact on traffic.”
