AFTERNOONS WITH AMOS EXCLUSIVE: Memphis, Tennessee is suffering from the same surge and scourge of violence, especially Black-on-Black violence as many other cities, including Indianapolis.  But Memphis, the nation’s 20th largest city, has created an innovative, bold plan to help stop the violence and find meaningful solutions and hope for its young people.  The effort is called Memphis Gun Down.  In an exclusive interview, Amos talked live with Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton.  A former defense attorney, Wharton is in his second term as Memphis’ Mayor. Wharton is a former Chief Public Defender of Shelby County and was the first African-American Mayor of that county. He then became Memphis’ City Mayor. Mayor Wharton talked with Amos and Afternoons with Amos listeners about the Memphis Gun Down initiative. It’s a comprehensive effort by the city incorporating a broad coalition of government, business, media, civic institutions, churches and the grassroots.  The effort has a strong social media component.  And the initiative pays special emphasis on listening to young people and having young people participate in the process. Memphis Gun Down is a program that many parts of it could and SHOULD be adapted by Indianapolis officials, especially Mayor Greg Ballard. Throughout the interview, Mayor Wharton’s street savvy and downhome wisdom touched a chord with listeners.  Click the Link To Learn More About Memphis Gun Down.
