The FBI has identified a 34 year old African-American from Texas who was a native of New York as the alleged gunman who murdered 12 persons Monday at the Washington DC Navy Yard.  The FBI says that the Aaron Alexis, from Fort Worth was one of the gunmen involved in the attack at the headquarters of several major Naval commands and installations in Southeast Washington this morning. According to the Washington Post, Alexis is a native of Brooklyn, NY who served in the Navy for four years from May 2007 to January 2011 in the Naval reserves. According to the Post, Alexis rose to the rank of Aviation Electricians’ Mate 3rd Class during his naval service and was assigned to a Naval Air Station in Ft. Worth Texas. Alexis is suspected of being one, of possibly two gunmen who fired a fusillade of shots at the Naval Base that killed twelve men and women.  Alexis was killed by law enforcement officers who responded.  Police and Federal agents are investigating whether a second gunman, described as Black man in fatigues carrying a “long gun” was Alexis’ accomplice in the crimes.  It is rare that African-Americans have been involved as the gunman in one of these mass shooting tragedies.  The investigation into the killings, including the motive why is continuing.
