Indiana and Indianapolis are dependent on creating their electric power by using power plants that burn coal. Unfortunately coal use increases air pollution and increases global warming and negatively impacts the environment.  Appearing on Afternoons with Amos, Mary Anne Hitt of the Sierra Club talked about why Indiana and Indianapolis needs to cut its ties to coal fueled power plants.  The Sierra Club is America’s oldest environment organization, formed in the late 19th century.  Hitt, a resident of West Virginia, one of the country’s biggest coal producing states, heads the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Project which sets as its goal the elimination of coal fueled power plants in the country.  On the program Hitt told Amos and listeners that Indianapolis Power and Light’s coal power plant on South Harding Harding street on the southwest side should be phased out. Hitt was joined by Park Tutor senior Keenan Rhodes, who is an intern at the K.I. Ecocenter in Indianapolis which is partnering with the Sierra Club on their Beyond Coal Campaign.  Rhodes and Hitt talked about the importance of more African-Americans getting involved and engaged in environmental issues.  Hitt also talked about the power and promise of alternative sources of electricity, especially solar power and wind power.  Click the Link to Learn more about the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign. Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign Click the Arrow to hear Amos’ Interview with Sierra Club’s Mary Anne Hitt.
