Indiana University President Michael McRobbie appeared live on Afternoons with Amos to discuss efforts by the University to increase the numbers of African-American students both on the Bloomington campus and on IU’s seven other Indiana campuses, including IUPUI in Indianapolis. Between 2011 and 2013, the number of African-American students enrolled at Indiana University declined by 11.8% or 1,027 students.  For the current Fall Semester, 6,895 African-Americans attend IU campuses. Some 6.9% of the overall enrollment of 115,412.  The largest number of African-American students attend IUPUI, 2,783 or 9.5% of the total.  The second largest total is the Bloomington Campus, 1,652, some 4.0% of the total enrollment. Last Spring, scores of African-American students, faculty and staff protested on the Bloomington campus concerned about declining African-American enrollment, and a lack of commitment of money, staff and other resources towards keeping the University’s commitment of dramatically increasing African-American enrollment.

In the interview, President McRobbie talked with Amos and listeners about the University’s efforts to increase the numbers of African-American students and efforts to retain them and have them graduate on time within four years.  President McRobbie, joined by IU’s new Vice-President for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs James Wimbush, outlined talked efforts to add more advisers and staff in programs like IU’s Hudson/Holland Scholars program which seeks to recruit and retain talented African-American students to IU.  Both academic officials talked about issues of tuition, college remediation, the role of Ivy Tech as a school that helps provide remediation and feeds students to IU.  President McRobbie talked about keeping tuition costs low and IU’s efforts to try and recruit, attract and retain minority faculty.
