Winter is approaching and the cold weather is practically already here, causing natural hair to become dryer than usual. It’s important to take extra care of your strands during the colder months to prevent damage and breakage. Here are a few tips to keep your hair in good shape throughout the winter season:

Use heavier butters and oils

Depending on your hair type, you might typically use light oils in your hair. Now that it’s cooler, you might want to consider using a heavy shea butter or a thick oil like Jamaican castor oil to seal moisture in your hair that can be lost in the cold air.

Wear hair up or in protective style

During the winter we wear materials our hair hates. From sweaters to scarfs, if your hair is out it will rub against the materials causing it to come out over time. Try wearing hair up in a bun or in other protective styles like twist or braids.

Wear satin lined hats

It’s hard not to wear a hat in the wintertime, but if you’re a natural you should invest in one that is lined with satin. You can purchase one from Etsy at stores like this. It will keep you warm and your strands protected all at the same time!

Deep condition

If you already deep condition on a regular basis –great! If not, this is the perfect time to start. Deep conditioning once a week will keep your hair moisturized and strong enough to handle the harsh weather conditions this winter. A lot of people don’t realize how necessary deep conditioning is until they try it and see a significant difference. This is something to add to your regimen ASAP!

Avoid wearing wet hair outside

This is the worst time of year for wash and go styles. For one, it’s not the best health choice to go out in the cold with a head full of wet hair. Also, exposing extremely wet hair to the brick cold will instantly dry your hair even more so than it would if dry. If you want to wear a wash and go, I suggest letting time for your hair to dry at least 80 percent. Save your strands and the possibility of getting sick.
