For thirty-one years Mary Beth Bonaventura was the well respected head of the Juvenile Court in Lake County, Indiana’s second largest county.  Her record of fairness and accomplishment won her kudos and plaudits from all sides of the political spectrum. Gov. Mike Pence appointed Judge Bonaventura to head the state’s troubled Department of Child Services (DCS), which deals with the problems of children in need, children who have been abused, children who need foster care.  In her first Afternoons with Amos appearance, Judge Bonaventura talked about her goals for the department.  She stressed the need for more and better training for DCS caseworkers and staff.  She strongly indicated that DCS’ priority was to place children with their parents (if possible). If not, then with blood family members and relatives.  Placing children in foster care is the last resort if family placement, keeping children and family together isn’t possible. Judge Bonaventura also talked with Amos and listeners about some of the urban “myths” surrounding DCS and children.  Judge Bonaventura was adamant that children can’t just call just to get out of obeying their parents.  And Judge Bonavantura was adamant that in Indiana parents DO have the right to spank their children.  But the Judge warned that using “belts, switches, cords” and other materials that could cause visible bruises, scars, bleeding and other injuries was not allowed and was unlawful. Said the Judge, if you wouldn’t want your neighbor doing that to your child, then you shouldn’t do it.” Click the Arrow to Hear Amos Interview  with the Head of the Department of Child Services Judge Mary Beth Bonaventurra.
