Several businesses and attractions are celebrating Martin Luther King Junior Day.  Patrons are invited to ”do good” while visiting the sites in White River State Park to observe the service holiday. Anyone donating a canned food item gets in free at the Eiteljorg Museum, IMAX Theater, Indiana State Museum, NCAA Hall of Champions, and the Indianapolis Zoo.  Canned goods benefit Gleaners Food Bank.

Lawyers Offer Free Legal Advice

Nearly 200 lawyers are having a “day on” on this MLK-Day, as well. Members of the Indiana State Bar Association are offering their time to provide free legal advice—about 200-thousand dollars worth in legal fees. Attorneys will be at several walk-in sites throughout the city. For information about the various sites, call 1-800-266-2581.

The Indiana Christian Leadership Conference (ICLC) is hosting the 45th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration service at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, 1651 Dr. Andrew J. Brown Avenue.  Pre-birthday festivities begin at 10 a.m. filled with music and fellowship and the official service gets underway at 11 a.m. with Karen Freeman-Wilson, the mayor of Gary, Ind., as the keynote speaker.  Former Senator Richard Lugar will receive the 2014 “Drum Major for Justice” Award and remarks will be offered by various appointed and elected city, state and federal officials. This celebration was begun by the late Indiana civil rights leader, the Reverend Andrew J. Brown, a personal friend of Dr. King in 1969.
