Freedom Indiana’s Megan Robertson (R), Indy Chamber’s Angela Smith-Jones (C) in studio with Amos

Those fighting to prevent placing into Indiana’s Constitution a definition of marriage that already exists in Indiana law told their side of the issue in a special edition of Afternoons with Amos.  Freedom Indiana is a broad coalition of Indiana businesses, elected officials of all three major political parties, and individuals across all ranges of Indiana society including clergy who feel strongly that Indiana’s Constitution doesn’t need to define something that’s already defined in state law.  Megan Robertson, Executive Director of Freedom Indiana was joined by Angela Smith-Jones of the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce and Freedom Indiana’s Jennifer Wagner explained why this constitutional amendment isn’t needed.  Robertson and Smith-Jones stressed that not only was marriage between a man an a woman legal in Indiana, but that adopting it as a constitutional amendment would send a chilling effect to individuals who would feel that Indiana was become a less tolerant state.  Smith-Jones said that the Chamber’s membership felt strongly that passage of the amendment would encourage bright creative individuals who already live in Indiana to move away sensing a less tolerant state. She also said that adoption of the measure could encourage those other bright, creative persons not to move to Indiana. The three guests stressed that Freedom Indiana was not advocating gay marriage in Indiana.  In fact, said Robertson, Freedom Indiana contains persons in their coalition who oppose gay marriage.  There are others who oppose gay marriage but favor civil unions.  What unites Freedom Indiana is the belief that this issue doesn’t need to be enshrined in the state’s Constitution.  Listeners reacted to Freedom Indiana’s positions with a wide ranging discussion that covered multiple aspects of a very emotional issue.
