Filmmaker Michele Stephenson

american-promise-posterOver a period of nearly 12 years, two African-American filmmakers created a documentary chronicling the lives of two young African-American boys as they attended one of the country’s top private schools. The documentary American Promise by Michele Stephenson and Joe Brewster shined a light on issues of Black families raising Black boys and spotlighted the achievement gap and the effort to provide educational opportunities for African-American youth and help close the Black achievement gap.  Appearing on the Afternoons with Amos Friday with Amos & Abdul filmmaker Stephenson talked about American Promise which debuted on the PBS documentary series POV February 3rd. And is available on the POV website from February 4th through March 5th.  The documentary goes deep into the struggles Black youth have in school and how they and parents cope.  The film won a special award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and has received numerous other honors.
