IPS Supt. Dr. Lewis Ferebee
A year ago the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) asked the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce (Indy Chamber) for assistance in analyzing IPS’ non academic and non classroom operations to see if there were ideas and strategies IPS could utilize to help improve its operations, be more efficient, get better use of its facilities and help close a looming $30+ million dollar deficit. This week the Indy Chamber and IPS shared the results of their detailed 65 page report. Appearing on Afternoons with Amos, Indy Chamber President Michael Huber and Task Force Member Joe Slash, Indianapolis Urban League President discussed some of the recommendations of the report with IPS Superintendent Dr. Lewis Ferebee. The report outlines the under-utilization of IPS buildings and provides ideas on better utilization. The report talks about exploring new options for transporting IPS students using IndyGo. The report talked about improvements in computer and IT technology and improvements in personnel and human resources practices. Also during the interview, IPS Supt. Ferebee commented on the decision by the IPS Board to not renew the contracts of 23 administrators and principals. Of the twenty-three, twelve are African-American – nine women, 3 men. Dr. Ferebee was asked how this affects racial diversity of IPS Administrators. Dr. Ferebee also commented on a breaking story of a settlement with the US Justice Department on correcting inequities where IPS wasn’t adhering to Title IX requirements of equal access and facilities to IPS athletics for girls as well as boys. Indy Chamber President Michael Huber also commented on proposed plans for Indianapolis to try and recruit more young professionals to the city and whether that effort will include efforts to attract more young Black professionals.
