FIRST PERSON REPORT: Over a half century ago, the dynamic pastor of Indianapolis’ Mt. Zion Baptist Church had an idea.  The Rev. Dr. R.T. Andrews wanted his church to be one that provided services and ministry from “The Cradle to The Grave”.  One Sunday, as the service was ending, Rev. Andrews told the congregation that he had an idea to start up a credit union to provide financial services, loans to church members and the community.  He asked for members who were interested in working on the project to stay after Sunday service.  From that began a series of meetings and then in 1964, the Mt. Zion Federal Credit Union, a credit union chartered by the federal government was born.  It’s now the oldest, Black-owned, non governmental Federal credit union in the state of Indiana.  I was deeply honored to have been asked to share some remarks with the Credit Union’s members on their 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Church on April 5th.  The current pastor of this groundbreaking church, Mt. Zion Baptist, is the Rev. Dr. Phillip Karl James.  Pastor James is continuing Dr. R.T. Andrews’ legacy of ministry and service to Indianapolis as the church continues with their senior housing, credit union, day care and other services to our community.  The Board of the Credit Union, headed by President Bobby Conner are to be commended.  Despite the Great Recession and the economic hardship, the Mt. Zion Federal Credit Union is growing.  Three other Indianapolis churches are joining in the membership organization which will help expand the credit union’s ability to service.  With assets of nearly $800,000, Mt. Zion Federal Credit Union is poised to continue to expand to another half century of service to our community.
