WP_20140411_13_53_14_ProFor a half century the Rev. Dr. Melvin Girton has been a spiritual and moral force in Indianapolis and its African-American community.  From the days of the civil rights era to the 21st century, Rev. Girton has pastored the Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis UNWA neighborhood.  For several terms, he served as leader of the city’s Baptist Ministers Alliance, the alliance of the city’s major Baptist churches.  He has counseled Governors and Mayors, legislators, Councilpersons, business leaders and just plain folks.  Rev. Girton was a witness to history. The night Dr. Martin Luther King was killed, Rev. Melvin Girton sat in a room at the old Marrott Hotel with Senator Robert Kennedy talking about violence and the impact of Dr. King’s death. In a special Afternoons with Amos interview, Rev. Dr. Melvin Girton talked about his career ministering for Christ.  In the interview with Amos, Rev. Girton talked about the activism of the Black church in the 1960’s and 1970’s, how direct action opened up employment and other opportunities for Blacks.  Rev. Girton frankly talks about the divisions today in Indianapolis’ Black leadership and how those divisions are holding the community back. And Rev. Girton talks about his ministry and devotion and service to his community. Click the Arrow to Hear Amos’ revealing interview with this Dedicated Man of God. Runs 27 Minutes ©2014 WTLC/Radio One.
