health fair 3Twenty-nine years ago, then Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Woodrow Myers, the first (and only) African-American to hold that post and then legendary Indiana Black Expo President Rev. Charles Williams came up with an idea.  Hold a Health Fair during Indiana Black Expo.  The result of that collaboration has been the country’s largest minority health fair.  In an extended Afternoons with Amos interview, this year’s 29th InShape Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair at Indiana Black Expo was previewed.  health fair 2Antoinette Holt, Director of Minority Health for the Indiana State Department of Heath which sponsors the Health Fair, talked about the many screenings and events at this year’s event which begins Thursday afternoon July 17th and continues through Sunday, July 20th in Hall D of the Indiana Convention Center.  Theme of this year’s Health Fair is “Be Happy, Be Healthy, Be Active”, Holt told Amos and listeners. She stressed the over $1,000 in free health screenings one can receive attending the Health Fair.  Holt also discussed the many special events and activities, cooking and exercise demonstrations and much more.  health fair 1Former NBA great Dominique Wilkins and Food Network’s Chef Curtis Aikens will be among the celebrities at the Health Fair.  Opening Night of the Health Fair, Thursday, July 17th is free and is especially for senior citizens and the handicapped and their families to attend. Kelly Mitchell of FSSA appeared on the program to talk about the free door-to-door ride services being provided by FSSA and the Health Fair for folks wanting to attend the free Health Fair Free Opening Night.  To reserve a ride you need to call 317-232-1731 before July 12th.  The Health Fair at Black Expo has many great sponsors. Community health networks is one of them and they’re responsible for check-in at the Health Fair.
