What’s Going on in the Headlines on Thursday
The viewing for slain IMPD Officer Perry Renn will be held today at Crown Hill Funeral Home on 38th Street at Clarendon Road. Citizen’s and the law enforcement community will pay their respects from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. The 22-year veteran officer was killed on Saturday in the Forest Manor neighborhood while answering a call of shots fired in an alley. Funeral services for Renn will be Friday at 11 a.m. downtown at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Both are open to the public.
The Marion County Prosecutor may seek the death penalty against the man accused of gunning down Officer Renn. Murder charges against Major Davis Junior have been officially filed. According to court documents filed Wednesday, Renn was shot three times. The fatal shot struck him under his right arm, passing through his right lung and heart.
In response to last weekend’s shooting that injured seven people, two mobile surveillance cameras are now up in Broad Ripple. One is located at the intersection of Westfield Boulevard and College Avenue. The other is at Winthrop and Broad Ripple Avenue. Officials hope the cameras will make people think twice before committing a crime, and if they do, record them in the act.
Arlington High School faces more troubles now that the non-profit managing it says they’re running out of money. Tindley, the company hired by the state to run the troubled northeastside school, says it needs more than two-million dollars of increased funding, or partner with IPS for a possible transfer of ownership. The state took over the school two years ago after six straight years of “F” grades. They’ve assigned a task force to look at options.
Indiana’s governor is ignoring some legal marriages performed recently over a three-day period in the state. Any same-sex marriage that took place after a federal judge overturned Indiana’s ban will not be recognized. In a memo issued Monday by Governor Mike Pence, the governor said the law against gay marriage is “in full force and effect,” and all executive branch agencies should act as if the court order on June 25th had not been issued. Hundreds of marriages were performed following the ruling, until it was stayed by a federal appeals court in Chicago on June 27th. This will not however apply to the out of state marriage of Amy Sandler and Nikole Quasney, keeping in line with an appellate court order. Their union will be recognized.
A standoff near Houston is over and six people are dead. Harris County authorities say the suspected gunman surrendered to police after sitting in his car for about four hours. Six people, including four children were killed Wednesday night in the suburb of Spring.
Senators will consider a White House request for border assistance today. President Obama is asking Congress for an emergency budget allocation of almost four billion dollars to better-deal with the southwest border crisis.
Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin will serve up to ten years in a federal lockup. That was the sentence handed down yesterday morning by a U.S. District Court judge. Nagin was found guilty earlier this year on 20 of 21 criminal corruption counts including bribery, fraud, money laundering, and obstruction of justice. Nagin, who has spoken here in Indy, was the mayor of the Crescent City during Hurricane Katrina.

The NBA’s moratorium period is over and free agents can now be officially signed. The “New York Daily News” reports Carmelo Anthony will re-sign with the Knicks today. Reports have LeBron James still deciding between the Heat and the Cavaliers. Here at home, the Pacers are still trying to re-sign guard Lance Stephenson, who was offered a five-year contract worth $44 million dollars.
The Indiana Fever are in action today hosting the Sun at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Indiana has won three of four to get to 9-and-10. This is the first of four straight home games. Connecticut is 9-and-11 overall. Tip is at Noon.
