In national news:

Governor Jay Nixon has ordered in the National Guard to the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, amid continuing unrest over the killing of unarmed teenager, Michael Brown. The violence escalated overnight despite the enforced curfew–a likely a reaction to the results of the independent autopsy of Michael Brown released Sunday which says Brown was shot six times–twice in the head and four times in the arm. St. Louis County police reported Molotov cocktails hurled at them and one person shot. The governor says the deployment is to restore peace and order to the community.

Regarding the release of Michael Brown’s independent autopsy, Dr. Michael Baden’s report says one of the bullets fired by a Ferguson police officer entered Brown’s skull as his head was bent forward and that was likely the fatal shot. The shots did not appear to come at a very close range because there was no gunpowder present on his body. Baden oversaw the autopsy.

Two reactions of note have come regarding the killing of Brown, the unarmed teen: NAACP President Cornell William Brooks is critical of how police in Ferguson Missouri have handled the fallout from the deadly shooting of Brown. Brooks told CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, the release of surveillance video apparently showing Brown in a scuffle and possible robbery at a convenience store was a quote, “post mortem character assassination.” He went on to say he didn’t want to liken their police department to the Keystone Cops because quote, “I don’t want to insult the Keystone Cops.”

Also, long-time Georgia Congressman John Lewis wants to see a national dialogue on race. Lewis spoke to NBC’s “Meet the Press” about the Brown killing in Ferguson. Lewis said it’s a shame a city with a 70-percent African American population only has three black police officers.

The U.S. is conducting more air strikes in Iraq against ISIS militants. U.S. Central Command says drones and airplanes conducted 14 raids yesterday on ISIS positions. The strikes follow nine that were conducted Saturday near the damn and Erbil.

Sports:

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck threw for 89 yards and a touchdown on Saturday, but that wasn’t enough to keep ‘the Horse’ from dropping their second preseason game. They lost this one 27-26 to the Giants. Indianapolis blew a lead, giving up all 27 points to Eli Manning’s crew in the fourth quarter after going up 26-0 in the contest. The Colts next host the New Orleans Saints in their third preseason game on Saturday.

A few blocks and a day away, the Indiana Fever closed their regular season with a stumble. The ladies fell to the New York Liberty on Sunday. The Fever’s Maggie Lucas had 17 points in the 73-61 loss. The Fever closed the regular season with a 16-and-18 record, however their action and opportunities continue. They’re playoff-bound and will host the Washington Mystics in the first round. Game One is set for Thursday or Friday.
