The suspected serial killer who is charged with murdering at least one woman in Northwest, Indiana is expected to be in court today.  Darren Vann of Gary was arrested Friday after Afrika Hardy was found dead in a Hammond Motel 6. He’s since been charged in her murder. Police say Vann helped authorities find the bodies of six other victims, who were uncovered—mainly in abandoned houses—in Gary over the weekend. Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson speaks about this case HERE.

Meanwhile here in Indy, concerns are growing in one near-north neighborhood where the bodies of three African-American females have each been discovered over the last few months. The latest discovery was Saturday leading some to believe that some unknown predator is preying on women in their forties and fifties just outside of downtown Indy. The Marion County Coroner released the identities of the two badly decomposed bodies found in June as Loy Ofsthun, 56, and Selese Goss, 45. The body of Edna Wilson, 49, was found over the weekend. In an update…Indianapolis metro police are still looking for leads in the two-month old murder of a Ben Davis High School student. The burned remains of Dominique Allen were found by a man walking his dog behind a house on North Elder.  Investigators say they’re trying to start fresh with the case by assigning new detectives, and retired ones with more experience to put new eyes on the case.

In a developing story Tuesday morning…Homicide detectives are investigating the multiple shooting of a man on Indy’s northeast side. Police were called to 36th Street and Euclid Avenue around 6 a.m. That’s where they found the man laying with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Eskenazi Health alive, but his condition is unknown at this time.

Two people accused of breaking into the home of a 94-year-old WWII veteran and severely beating him, are now behind bars. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department says a tip led them to Justin Wayne Lawson and Joseph Michael Lowe who also robbed their victim. Meanwhile, Hershel “Bud” Moore says he still has a few sore spots following the October 10th attack. Moore also says he appreciates the cards and phone calls he’s received from all over the country from people outraged by what happened to him.

Indianapolis firefighters are investigating the cause of an apartment fire on Indy’s northwest side. It ignited just before midnight Monday night in the Eagle Point Apartments on Eagle Point Drive. They say the fire spread through two units displacing some of the residents, however no injuries were reported.

Changes are coming to Indiana’s food stamp program and it could cause nearly 65,000 Hoosiers to lose their benefits. The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration says the state is losing its SNAP waiver. The new law will require people without children who receive assistance to either find a job or take 20-hours a week of job training. The state is expected to drop the waiver early next year.

The Indiana State Department of Health is trying to clear up misconceptions about Ebola. To address concerns, they’ve opened an Ebola call center that will allow people to speak directly to a state health representative about symptoms, screening and diagnosis. The call center is open Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and can be reached at 877-826-0011.

The Indiana Attorney General is suing a California telemarketer for violating the Do Not Call list. Peter Tolman of Leads Direct Marketing is accused of targeting Hoosiers in an illegal robocall campaign trying to sell home security systems and related items. The lawsuit cites about 60 complaints, mostly in the Indianapolis area.

Legal and law enforcement officials gathered last night with the community for a public forum to discuss legal rights, policing and the intersection of race at Martin University. Hosted by Juvenile Judge Geoffrey Gaither, they addressed the controversial question, “Is Indy a Ferguson Waiting to Happen?” More than a hundred people attended the event discussing legal rights, misperceptions, education and disparities that lead to tensions between the police and those who are policed, as is the scene playing out in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri in the aftermath of the killing of unarmed teen Michael Brown by a Ferguson police officer. In national headlines:

Superstar Paralympian Oscar Pistorius is heading to prison for up to five years for shooting his model girlfriend to death through a bathroom door. The South African double-amputee was convicted of culpable homicide last month for the 2013 death of Reeva Steenkamp. The judge also sentenced Pistorius to three years suspended for illegally discharging a firearm during the incident.

Terrorist group ISIS is pulling in big money from the oil fields it now controls in Iraq and Syria. A new report from global analytics firm IHS estimates the militants stand to make $800 million a year. Oil is the prime funding source for ISIS, and the reason it can supply itself with weapons and military vehicles.

The Catholic Diocese of Dallas is taking care of the family of Thomas Duncan. Bishop Kevin Farrell says he offered the diocese’s Conference and Formation Center to Louise Troh and her family because he had to do something. Farrell says he did think of the consequences of giving the family a place to live, but knew it was the right thing to do.

Meanwhile… New guidelines are going into effect for when healthcare workers are treating Ebola patients. CDC director Tom Frieden announced three new procedures that he says should increase the margin of safety for those workers. The first is making sure the doctors and nurses receive training and show they’re ready to treat people infected with the deadly disease.
