Less than a week after an appearance by his Republican opponent, Democratic Candidate and incumbent Marion County Sheriff John Layton appeared on Afternoons with Amos to defend his record and push back against attacks by his Republican opponent Emmitt Carney.  A relaxed Sheriff Layton talked about his accomplishments in his first term including getting national accreditation for both his Sheriff Department and the Marion County Jail.  Layton talked about his efforts to improve treatment of women inmates at the jail, especially those who are pregnant while incarcerated.  Sheriff Layton strongly pushed back against allegations that his budget was overspent by some $30 million.  “Not true”, said Layton, saying that his budget had increased by 1% a year during his tenure; an increase of a little over $1 million yearly.  Layton told Afternoons with Amos listeners that he had wanted a clean campaign. That he’d sent a letter to his opponent at the start of the campaign pledging to run “a clean campaign”; but his opponent didn’t respond.  Listeners praised Layton for his visibility in the community, especially at churches, pushing back against another charge by his opponent.  An opponent Layton said had told people he wasn’t receiving financial support from the Republican Party when in fact he was. Listeners called to ask Sheriff Layton questions about his programs and stewardship of the office and to salute him for some of his initiatives.  Click the Media Player to Hear the Sheriff John Layton Afternoons with Amos Interview.
