Get In the Know With Kim’s Tuesday News & Headlines

Today is Veterans Day. Federal, state, county and local offices are closed, and most banks to observe this day to honor our Vets.  There’s also no mail delivery.  Schools are open and buses will run on normal schedules. The annual Veterans Day Parade steps off at 11:45 a.m. downtown on Pennsylvania.

We now know that the pedestrian struck and killed Tuesday morning  on the northwest side is a woman. WRTV is reporting that the driver of the eastbound car that struck her stopped and stayed on the scene telling IMPD that he didn’t see the woman who was walking in the eastbound bike lane because it was dark and she was wearing dark clothing. This accident scene is in the area of Westlane Road just east of Michigan Road.

Indianapolis police are looking for a suspect  involved in a car chase where shots were fired.  The suspect led officers in a pursuit south on Georgetown Road and the area near West 59th Street Monday night.  Police say officers shot at the vehicle.  They’re checking local hospitals for anyone who might have checked in with gunshot wounds.

Two teenagers are behind bars for what Bloomington police say is an unusual sexual assault.  Vaylen Glazebrook and Michael Deweese are both 19-years-old and are accused of breaking into an apartment early Sunday morning, holding two Indiana University students at gunpoint and raping them.  A third 19-year-old accused of being the getaway driver was also arrested.

The fifth fire in six months at First Christian Missionary Baptist Church has members on edge.  A blaze Monday morning left walls charred inside.  Some members say they could be targeted because of their crime fighting efforts.  They’ve been active in helping to shut down drug houses and put up 15-thousand dollars to buy back guns off the streets.

A man viciously attacked while rescuing a 13-year-old boy from two pit bulls now needs help himself.  Russell Hill was severely injured on November 2nd, and is facing mounting hospital bills.  He doesn’t have health insurance.  A fundraising website has been set up at Go Fund Me called “Hero Russell Hill.”

One of the chief architects of the Affordable Care Act says it never would have become law if the voters had known more about it. Economist Jonathan Gruber made his comments at a conference last year, and they are getting attention now because a conservative group is circulating a video of his remarks. The video shows Gruber saying “the stupidity of the American voter” was critical to getting the law passed.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney says the grand jury considering whether to charge Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson is still working on the case. Wilson shot unarmed teenager Michael Brown on August 9th.  Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch said Monday that a ruling will come in mid-to late November.

The latest statistics from the FBI show crime is down.  Today’s report says violent crimes and property crimes were both down slightly more than four-percent in 2013.  The crime statistics report includes data from more than 18,000 law enforcement agencies on specific crimes brought to their attention.

The University of California-San Francisco is pooling together over eight-thousand scientific research papers that address the dangers of sugar.  UCSF is launching the Sugar Science Initiative to highlight the best scientific findings on sugar and how it impacts our health.  Professor Laura Schmidt of UCSF calls the database “the definitive science that establishes the link between sugar and chronic disease.”

Back here at home on this Veteran’s Day, Indianapolis has some improvements to make when it comes to taking care of its veterans, according to a  new study.  WalletHub looked at the nation’s 100 largest cities and analyzed several factors, including the veteran unemployment rate, number of homeless veterans, college opportunities for veterans, crime statistics and cost of living.  Indianapolis ranked 77th.

Roy Hibbert posted 29 points and five rebounds to lead the Pacers to a 97-86 victory over the Jazz at Bankers Life Fieldhouse Monday night.  The Pacers have now ended a six-game losing streak. Up next–a trip to  South Beach. They face the Heat on Wednesday.
