Some tech companies are acquired for their product. Others are bought for the human talent. The issues surrounding “acqui-hires” was discussed yesterday at the annual Digital Summit in New York City, a partnership with Council of Urban Professionals, BET.Com, ADCOLOR , and InteractiveOne [parent company of NewsOne]. The panel included Heidi Messer who co-founded and ultimately sold Linkshare; Saadiq Rodgers-King co-founder of Hot Potato sold to Facebook August 2010; Andy Weissman partner with Union Square Ventures; Denmark West, former president of BET Digital Media and now a principal at Forrer Street Partners; and was moderated by Ty Ahmad-Taylor, founder of FanFeedr in 2008.

Read Blacks in Digital

The talk focused mainly around the changes that take place once a start-up company is bought by a larger company and the repercussions that follow whether positive or negative. West remarked that the biggest hiccup in acquisitions is generally the merge of cultures. To ensure successful mergers, companies have to make sure their values and purposes are aligned and that the proper talent is in place. The panelists agreed that the best shifts happen when the culture of the acquired company is preserved rather than immediately reorganized. The panelists discussed the Flickr acquisition by Yahoo the development disputes they have had. Gizmodo mentions that integration and not innovation was the focus which killed creativity. However, when done correctly, AOL’s purchase of Huffington Post for example, the rewards can be very much worth the effort. According to an article on CapitalNewYork, talent continued to flow into the newsroom despite the merger. They also considered the corporate culture of the Huffington Post and didn’t rush to break it up.

Another hurdle is acquiring top talent. Heidi Messer noted that a talent acquisition strategy became more important to her as she builds her new team. She lamented the lack of focus around that this principle in general with start-ups. What happens when top talent doesn’t come with the company and they leave because of the atmosphere change?

In the end, acquiring a start-up for their talent or their product is risky business. The companies that don’t learn to do it well take a hit, which they may never recover from while the ones who continue to do it successfully can leverage a distinct advantage in the never ending innovation race.

If you haven’t heard, Facebook is going public this week, and judging by the recently-upped price range for its offering there is no shortage of interest in the social network’s shares.

At the IPO price, now set for a range of $34-$38 per share, Facebook may be a great deal if it gets the sizable first-day pop enjoyed by many high-profile debuts. Many investors won’t have the chance to get in at that price though, and will have to think about buying shares at sharply higher levels once trading begins Friday.

Praise 102.7 has learned Pastor Marvin Winans was robbed and carjacked in Detroit at a gas station.

Apparently Pastor Winans was pumping gas at the Citgo Gas Station at Linwood and the Davison when he was robbed.

Those at the scene stated the pastor was pumping gas when two men came up and basically started kicking and punching him. They stole his Presidential Rolex watch, his cell phone and then his 2012 purple Infiniti SUV.

From what we were told, Pastor Winans may have some bruises and scratches, but he is going to be okay. He drove himself to the hospital where he is being treated.

Detroit police are investigating and looking for that vehicle and the suspects. They are also working to get surveillance video from the gas station.

Below is a photo courtesy of WXYZ at the scene of the crime.

A man who refuses to admit his mistakes can never be successful. But if he confesses and forsakes them, he gets another chance. Proverbs 28:13 (LB)

*** *** *** ***

*Here are four steps to take when starting over after a failure:

1. Accept responsibility for your own failure. If you’ve made a mistake, admit it. Welcome to the human race! Don’t blame others. To blame others is to “be lame.” Losers love to blame bad luck, the economy, the boss, their spouse, or even God for failure.

But winners never accuse others and never excuse themselves when they fail. In 1974, after an 88-game winning streak, the UCLA basketball team lost to Notre Dame in a game where they’d led by 11 points. The next day’s headline read: “Coach Wooden says, ‘Blame me!’” Wooden was a winner.

“A man who refuses to admit his mistakes can never be successful. But if he confesses and forsakes them, he gets another chance”
(Proverbs 28:13 LB).

2. Recognize the benefits of failure. Failure teaches you what doesn’t work. Thomas Edison, the great inventor, said, “Don’t call it a failure. Call it an education!”

Failure forces you to be more creative as you look for new ways to accomplish something. It prevents arrogance and egotism. If everything you did was a stunning success, no one could live with you!

Failure also causes you to reevaluate what’s important in life. It’s one way God gets you to reflect on the direction of your life. “Sometimes it takes a painful experience to make us change our ways” (Proverbs 20:30 GNT).

3. Ask God for wisdom to understand what caused your failure. Why did you fail? Is there any reason you might have set yourself up to fail? There are many unconscious reasons we sometimes sabotage our own efforts:

o Fear of success – Success may mean handling more responsibility than you want to carry.
o Guilt – If you feel you don’t deserve to succeed, you may set yourself up to fail.
o Resentment – Some people fail as a way of getting even with those who are pressuring them to succeed.
o Ask God what caused it – “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all …” (James 1:5 NIV).

4. Forget the past and focus on the future. Your past is past! It’s water under the bridge. You can’t change it so you may as well stop worrying about it. “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on …” (Philippians 3:13-14 NIV).

Growing up, summer was associated with sunshine, barbecues, swimming pools, vacations, boating and lazy days.

Eventually, summer became more than a vacation; it evolved into time spent between work and play. As I grew up and became more responsible, the inevitable summer job was imminent.

And so were born the summers of working at ice cream shops, summer camps and retail clothing stores to earn a quick buck (and make my parents proud).

Yet this summer’s crop of job seekers aren’t just looking to pass the time or make enough money to pay their bar tabs. Now, employed and jobless people alike are looking for work — including part-time, seasonal and temporary — to help get them through the heat of the summer and the job market.

Summer job seekers take note: 22 percent of employers are planning to hire seasonal workers this summer, according to a survey by CareerBuilder. Be prepared, however, for some stiff competition due to the tough economy.

“Summer job seekers face a bigger challenge this year than in years past, as the market is flooded with candidates looking for both full- and part-time positions,” said Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources for CareerBuilder. “The good news is that many traditional summer jobs are still available, but in this environment, it is essential that job seekers differentiate themselves and demonstrate how their skills can have a positive impact on a business in a short amount of time.”

Additionally, those looking for a job this summer might be able to land a full-time gig. More than half (57 percent) of companies will consider summer recruits for permanent placement within their organizations.

When it comes to summer paychecks, 43 percent of employers plan to pay summer workers $10 or more per hour and 6 percent plan to pay $20 or more per hour. Thirty percent expect paying between $8 and $10 per hour, while 9 percent expect to pay less than $7 per hour.

Where can I find a job?
Across all industries, the most popular summer positions are being offered in:

If you’re looking for work this summer, here are some of our favorite jobs to consider from the industries hiring above:

1. Amusement park worker

Summer sizzle: Amusement parks are a prime summer-job hub, mainly because your options are endless in terms of jobs. Just a few of the positions that need to be filled include performers, ride operators, customer service, mascots, game workers and food staff. (Did I mention the discounts on entry and funnel cakes?)

Salary: $21,758

2. Bartender

Summer sizzle: Summer seems to trigger a hidden thirst gland that’s been hibernating all winter. The first nice day rolls around and windows open, music plays and bars fill up. Bartenders make great money and keep busy serving up many a cold beverage to college students and workers taking a load off.

Salary: $21,876

3. Catering helper

Summer sizzle: Find a job helping a catering company part time during the summer and you’re in business. The scheduling for a gig like this is ideal: You’re able to work a certain amount of events per week, for a few hours at a time and at a great hourly rate.

Salary: $16,469

4. Construction worker

Summer sizzle: There are more than a few upsides to performing physically demanding work all summer long. The first few that come to mind are killer muscles, rewarding work and a great tan.

Salary: $31,781

5. Day-camp counselor

Summer sizzle: Rise and shine! It’s true that your days of sleeping in will be short-lived as a camp counselor, but working with kids is never short of pure entertainment and you’ll enjoy organizing group activities, like crafts or outings to the pool. Plus, you’ll get evenings and weekends off.

Salary: $20,493

6. Executive assistant

Summer sizzle: Although you’ll have to trade your bikini for office attire, the chances of finding administrative work are in your favor during the summer. As employees take summer vacation, many companies bring on extra staff to cover their projects. Plus, getting your foot in the door by helping companies tackle projects will do only good things for your résumé.

Salary: $49,270

7. Lifeguard

Summer sizzle: If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. That is, if you can’t afford to spend your days poolside for the fun of it, soak up some rays and get paid for it by keeping tabs on swimmers from your guard chair.

Salary: $16,782

8. Resort desk clerk

Summer sizzle: Every resort vacationer is looking for a little R and R, so you’ll work to ensure guests’ needs are met. On your downtime, you can spend your time enjoying some of the luxuries of the resort yourself.

Salary: $17,585

9. Tour guide

Summer sizzle: While living near a tourist trap or in a vacation town can be annoying at times, it can also work to your advantage. Options are endless when it comes to the things people want to see. You can find a job leading boat tours, bus tours, architecture tours, haunted mansion tours, museum tours … the list goes on. This summer gig is a great way to learn more about the city in which you live and get paid doing it.

Salary: $22,545

10. Valet parking attendant

From hotels to restaurants to concert venues to weddings, you can earn some serious cash in tips from generous patrons at any given place. And depending on the venue, chances are you’ll probably get to see some pretty cool stuff — and drive some pretty sweet cars — in the meantime.

MSN Money

The term “low-income” is usually a synonym for “poor.” But I just interviewed three people who wouldn’t use that word to describe themselves, even though they live on $18,000 a year or less — in two of the cases, much less — without going into debt.

Their ages are 25, 44 and 60. They’re all college-educated and have chosen to live frugally so they can pursue their own interests.

Their stories are relevant for a couple of reasons. First, they show what’s possible when you let go of consumerism and the hamster wheel of spending too much and then having to work to pay off your debts. Second, their thrifty habits offer lessons on how you may wind up having to live if you don’t get cracking on building up your retirement savings. That figure, $18,000, is about what you’d get over a year if you drew average Social Security checks (now about $1,200 a month) and tapped 4% of a $100,000 nest egg.

(Four percent is usually considered a “sustainable” withdrawal rate, meaning you’re unlikely to run out of money before you die. The $100,000 nest egg at retirement age may be a stretch for some; Employee Benefit Research Institute surveys indicate half of all workers have less than $25,000 saved (.pdf file).)

Thinking of refinancing? Find superlow rates

Here’s who these three frugal folks are:

Tyler Tervooren, 25. Until recently, Tervooren earned $56,000 a year as a construction manager. But he lives so thriftily in Portland, Ore. — his expenses are about $14,000 a year — that he was able to save the bulk of his salary. He’s now enrolled in a state program that allows people to collect unemployment benefits while they launch their own businesses — in Tervooren’s case, a blog called Advanced Riskology that encourages people to take more risks in their lives.

“Since I earned so much but spent so little, the amount of unemployment insurance I get covers all of my living expenses and actually allows me to still save a little bit,” Tervooren explained. “My savings cushion can support me for almost four years — (even) until I’m 30, if I need it to — before I have to start earning money again.”

Nancy Tudor, 44. Tudor earns about $10,000 a year from two part-time jobs, and she says it’s enough to meet her needs. She’s earned more in the past — she recently returned from a job teaching Renaissance history in London that paid about $30,000 a year — but prefers her simpler life in Albuquerque, N.M.

“I had the apartment overlooking the Thames and the flat-screen TV. It just felt really empty,” Tudor said. “I decided to come home to the desert and be a lot simpler.”

Carol Holst, 60. Once upon a time, Holst was married to a corporate executive and raising two daughters in Beverly Hills, Calif. When the marriage ended two decades ago, she turned down the court-ordered alimony, figuring she didn’t need the money but that he did.

“It would have reduced his lifestyle and wouldn’t have changed mine,” Holst said. “I’d still be living in a one-bedroom apartment in Glendale, and he’d be cursing me.”

Holst said she’s figured out how much is “enough” and lives happily on the $18,000 she nets from her part-time job as an office administrator. She enjoys the work but really likes the time it allows for her true passion, which is sharing what she’s learned about voluntarily simplicity. From the bedroom of her apartment, Holst runs the website Postconsumers.com, which promotes the idea that you don’t have to buy to be happy.

All three credit their parents for helping to instill the ideals of thrift and careful money management. Tudor also remembers grandparents who talked about the Great Depression and a prevailing ethic “that if you wanted something, you saved up for it.”

That includes education. Tervooren attended an in-state university with inexpensive tuition for residents, and he worked several jobs to pay for it. Tudor got a master’s degree on a scholarship that included student housing and a $1,000-a-month stipend, which was enough to cover her expenses and those of her now-grown daughter.

Tudor asked the girl, who was 6 at the time, to identify what was most important to her, explaining that they didn’t have money to buy everything they wanted.

“She wanted money to buy books . . . and to take dance lessons,” Tudor remembers. So Tudor carefully budgeted money to cover those expenses. Tudor believes that explaining their financial situation and soliciting her daughter’s input staved off demands for more stuff.

“She understood,” Tudor says. “It wasn’t ‘I want, I want, I want’ all the time.”

By Andrew Housser

Veterans’ Day is Thursday, Nov. 11. The holiday reminds us to remember those who have served the country in the armed forces. It’s also a good reminder and time for all Americans — including military service members and veterans, and their families – to respect themselves by checking up on their debt and financial plans.

Here are some steps to get started:

1) Understand your credit rating

Review your credit report for free once a year by visiting the websites of the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) or www.annualcreditreport.com. If your score is low, you might have to pay higher interest rates or even be denied credit in some situations. Low credit scores can affect employment, housing and even security rankings. If the report has mistakes or errors, contact the credit bureau immediately to request corrections.

2) Avoid payday loans

Legally, payday lenders cannot charge an annual interest rate higher than 36 percent to service members. But that interest rate is still very high – much more than credit cards, for example. That makes payday loans hard to pay off. Some payday loan borrowers fall into a bad cycle of debt, repaying a small loan for months and months. Instead, if you need money in the short term, look for other solutions: Borrow from a trusted friend or relative (and pay them back!), or even take a loan or credit-card cash advance if necessary. Then be sure you rework your budget so you will not run into the same problem again.

3) Build your credit score

If you have no credit history — or poor credit — use a prepaid card, gas card or store card to gradually build a credit history. Charge a few small expenses that are within your budget. Pay the bill on time every month. Always pay off the full bill to avoid interest charges.

4) Live within your means

Many service members earn a modest income. But it’s still a natural impulse to splurge when you re-enter civilian life. Don’t fall victim to the urge to take out loans or run up credit card bills to buy new furniture, electronic toys or sports equipment. Find smaller, affordable indulgences that will help you feel at home without running into debt. Start a small savings account to save up for the other purchases later.

5) Pay yourself first

Build a savings account so you will be prepared for emergencies without going into debt. Even $500 or $1,000 makes a big difference. To “find” money, hold a yard sale or work odd jobs and save what you make. If you have a paycheck deposited directly into your bank account, send a part of your check directly into a separate savings account. Eventually, you’ll want to have enough saved to cover expenses for three to six months of basic living costs. Once you’ve saved up this rainy-day fund, keep sending part of every paycheck into long-term savings, such as for education or a future home purchase.

6) Cover yourself and your family

Be sure you have health insurance, auto insurance and life insurance. Include disability insurance to help pay expenses if illness or injury forced you to quit working.

7) Have your own financial identity

Even if you are married, always keep at least one credit card in your name only. If you divorced or your spouse died, it could be difficult to obtain credit in your own name in the short term.

8) Take advantage of education and student debt resources for vets

The 2009 GI Bill can help military veterans pay for their education. The former GI Bills are still in place, however, and might be more beneficial to some veterans. The Veterans Administration has created a website to help veterans choose the right benefit. If you have existing student loans that are difficult for you to pay, the nonprofit Leave No Veteran Behind might be able to help.

9) Get help with debt

If you are in serious debt and cannot even make required minimum payments, consider getting help. Depending on the situation, debt consolidation, debt settlement or credit counseling may present viable options.

It isn’t an easy choice to serve your country, and it isn’t easy to manage your money properly, either. But with proper discipline, you can do both. On Veterans Day, take time to care of yourself by taking care of your finances.

*“Dancing With the Stars” survivor Bristol Palin has offered an apology for comments she and her 16-year-old sister Willow used to attack a schoolmate on Facebook this week.

Without mentioning the homophobic slurs specifically, Bristol posted to her Facebook page Wednesday night: “Willow and I shouldn’t have reacted to negative comments about our family. We apologize.”

She then pivoted , adding, “On a nicer note, thank you for supporting the great competition in Dancing with the Stars!”
