Democratic candidate for Governor John Gregg chose longtime State Senator Vi Simpson as his running mate and choice for Lt. Governor. The two veteran Hoosier Democrats talked to Afternoons with Amos in an exclusive extended interview. Gregg talked about why he picked Simpson and what she brings to the ticket and to a Gregg/Simpson Administration. Both Gregg and Simpson talked about the issues in the coming campaign, which starts and ends with putting Indiana back to work and bringing jobs to all parts of the state. They also explained why they would better Governor and Lt. Governor than the Republican candidates Mike Pence and Sue Ellspermann.

Rupert, of “Survivor” Fame Tells AWA Why He’s Running For Indiana’s Next Governor

Rupert Boneham achieved fame and a bit of a fortune as one of the most popular contestants on TV’s Survivor. Since his TV fame, Boneham has run a non-profit that works to provide skills and jobs to ex-offenders. Now he wants to give back to Indiana as our state’s next Governor. Rupert is the Libertarian candidate for Governor. In his first interview with Indiana Black media on Afternoons with Amos, Rupert explains why he’s running and the issues of importance to him. They include reducing government administrative costs, reducing incarceration of non-violent offenders, bringing jobs to Indiana, restoring vocational education and more.

Stay At Home Motherhood Not An Option For Black Women

Stay-at-home moms were in the spotlight last week after democratic strategist Hilary Rosen said stay-at-home mom Ann Romney had “actually never worked a day in her life.” This statement kicked off what has been dubbed the “mommy wars” — an intense debate between working women and stay-at-home moms about the value of each experience.

President Obama condemned Rosen’s remarks, saying, “there’s no tougher job than being a mom” and “when I think about what Michelle’s had to do, when I think about my own mom, a single mother raising me and my sister, that’s work. Anybody who would argue otherwise I think, probably needs to rethink their statement.”

While women across the country reacted to Rosen’s comments, some black women were mute on the topic. Unlike women of other ethnicities, black women have traditionally not had the choice to become stay-at-home mothers.

According to “Historical Changes in Stay-at-Home Mothers: 1969 to 2009″ by Rose M. Kreider and Diana B. Elliot the number of stay-at-home mothers has decreased from 9.8 million in 1969 to 5.7 million in 2009.

“Black women were about half as likely as White women to be a stay-at-home mother, while the odds for women of other races did not differ from those of White women,” Kreider and Elliot write.

Historically, black women have always worked.

“There is evidence that married black women have always been employed outside of the house in large numbers,” (Landry 2000) Kreider and Elliot note. “Even black mothers with young children were in the work force following World War II, when many of their white counterparts had withdrawn from the labor force” (Thistle 2006).

Now, the economy is perhaps the biggest reason why the idea of being a stay-at-mother for black women hasn’t been a reality. The recession took a toll on the economic status of many Americans and the black community was hit particularly hard.

The 8.2 percent unemployment rate is nearly double that for African-Americans at 14 percent.

“Women usually have better success getting jobs than black men do,” said Dr. Camille Charles, a Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. “So if you’re talking about a two parent household, she’s more likely to end up being the one to pick up the slack because historically the women have been more employable and more desirable employees because of the gender stereotypes we have as African-Americans.”

John Gregg is the Democratic candidate for Governor of Indiana. Gregg appeared for a full hour on Afternoons with Amos and talked extensively about his positions and views on putting Hoosiers back to work. Gregg, a former businessman, attorney, University President, Speaker of the Indiana House, also talked about lower gas prices, education, the problems in the state’s FSSA and Department of Child Services. Gregg also spoke frankly about right to work and providing job opportunities for ex-offenders and those who’ve been unemployed for months during the recession.

Identity made in homicide

(Muncie) – The Delaware County coroner has released the name of a woman found burned to death and wrapped in a sheet. Police found the body of Tonia J. Ingram, 40, last Saturday. Three suspects, Terry Rutledge, 44, Antowyn Warren, 33 and Regina Miller, have been charged with obstruction of justice, assisting a criminal and murder. Investigators believe Ingram was killed at a residence in the 300 block of North Hackley Street and her body dumped along the side of the road and then set afire to cover up the murder.

School district makes payout in bullying case

(Columbus)- The Bartholomew Consolidated School District will pay $100,000 dollars to settle a lawsuit filed by a former student. Margaret spreading sexually messages about her. The girl’s mother says her daughter was so stressed that she considered suicide and did not graduate with her class at Columbus North High School. The district has not commented on the case.

School bus driver fired

(Kokomo)- The Kokomo Center school district has fired a bus driver after she was arrested and charged with drunk driving last Saturday. The Howard County Sheriff’s Department says Theresa Mast, 56, had a blood-alcohol level at .20, two and a half times the legal limit while driving a bus full of girl’s to a swim meet. Motorists alerted police after they notice the bus swerving in traffic.

Smoking ban heard last night

(Indianapolis) – A controversial smoking ban was presented by City County Council president Ryan Vaughn last night and now is in the hands of the council. Vaughn’s plan calls for a smoking ban which exempts cigar and hookah bars and social clubs like the VFW and American Legion halls. Final passage is set for December 19 and if signed into law would become effective January 22, in time for the February 5^th Super Bowl.

Robbers target store

(Indianapolis) – Police are looking for armed robbers of a far northside jewelry store. The three suspects entered the Master Jewelry Store at 81^st and Bash Road shortly before noon Monday. Witnesses told police the robbers entered the store wearing rubber gloves and ordered employees to the floor before smashing jewelry cases. They were last seen headed southbound on Bash Street in a dark colored Ford Crown Victoria with tinted windows. No one was injured during the incident.

Postal service announces operation changes

(Washington) – In response to declining revenue and mail volume against the increased usage of the internet for bill paying and communication, major changes were proposed Monday wihin the U.S. postal system.. Those plans include closing 252 of the nation’s 461 mail processing centers which will create a one or two day delay of first class mail. Postal officials stated the moves were necessary to reduce their budget by $3 billion. Also in the announcement were job terminations; 28,000 postal workers could be without their jobs next year. Eight Indiana mail processing centers are on the proposed list for closing. Those centers are located in Muncie, South Bend, Terre Haute, Bloomington, Kokomo, Lafayette, Columbus and Gary.

Contractor set to bring jobs to Indiana

(Clarksville) – Military contractor Rivera Consulting Group says it plans to build a new facility in southern Indiana which is expected to bring 85 jobs to that area by 2014. The company will spend $5.6 million dollars to expand operations and build a new site for its headquarters. Rivera Consulting Group provides software development services, defense applications as well as consulting to private and government agencies. The Economic Development Corporation says it offered the company more than $1 million in tax credits..
