DALLAS — Police say Pastor Sandy McGriff broke into a church members home to steal fur coats and laptop computers on Christmas Eve.

Never has the victim, Serita Agnew’s faith been so shaken.

Harlem Pastor Accused Of Child Molestation Resigns

The New York Daily News is reporting that a prominent Black Catholic Pastor has resigned after allegations of child molestation.

A prominent Harlem pastor who was accused by a retired NYPD cop and nine other men of molesting them when they were kids has resigned.

Monsignor Wallace Harris was the highest-ranking black cleric in the New York Archdiocese – a high-profile priest who arranged the 2008 Mass at Yankee Stadium for Pope Benedict and gave the invocation at Gov. Paterson’s swearing in.

Brooklyn Pastor Forgives Drunk Cop For Killing His Daughter

A grieving Brooklyn preacher set aside his broken heart Wednesday and – with a simple handshake and a few touching words – forgave the disgraced cop who killed his daughter.

Grasping Andrew Kelly’s hand, the Rev. Varius Valnord looked into the former officer’s eyes and told him, “I forgive you.”

“I don’t want any more pain to be caused to anybody.”

Valnord said he also told Kelly, a 32-year-old father of two young girls, to put himself in his place.

“If anything happened to your daughters, you would feel the same way I feel,” the preacher said. “I wish nothing happens to your daughters.”

Pastors Facing Unemployment

According to eurweb.com Pastors affiliated with the United Methodist Church could find themselves in the unemployment line.

According to The Tennessean.com, the long-standing practice of guaranteed jobs for pastors could come to an end.

Methodist bishops and two denominational committees want to end job security for ministers, known as guaranteed appointment. And shrinking membership and budgets may give Methodist leadership what they want by default.

But as membership has dropped, so has the number of churches able to afford pastors. In 1960, United Methodists claimed about 10.8 million members.

Today, membership is at 7.8 million. Average Sunday attendance is about 95 people. And half of Methodist churches draw 50 or fewer people to Sunday services.

A church needs about 125 people to support a full-time minister. In some cases, elders serve two or more churches at a time. Many churches are served by part-time or local pastors who have no job security.

A rash of suicides and suicide attempts has some Baptists in the Carolinas doing some soul searching.

Hickory Pastor David Treadway, 42, is the latest clergyman to kill himself in his parked car leaving his family and members of his church family at Sandy Ridge Baptist to ask why.

Although Treadway had told his congregation he was in treatment several months before his suicide, parishioners said it still came as a shock.

In addition to Treadway, two others in North Carolina attempted suicide, and three in South Carolina succeeded, all in the last four years.

A recent USA Today article said Christian culture, especially Southern evangelicalism, creates the perfect environment for depression. Counselors say pastors suffer in silence, unwilling or unable to seek help or even talk about it. Sometimes they leave the ministry. Occasionally they end it all. Being a pastor — a high-profile, high-stress job with nearly impossible expectations for success — can send one down the road to depression, according to pastoral counselors.

“We set the bar so high that most pastors can’t achieve that,” H.B. London told USA Today. London is vice president for pastoral ministries at Focus on the Family, based in Colorado Springs, Colo. “And because most pastors are people-pleasers, they get frustrated and feel they can’t live up to that.”

Besides the recession’s strain on church budgets, depressed pastors increasingly report frustration over their congregations’ resistance to cultural change. Most depression does not lead to suicide, but almost all suicides begin with depression. Depression causes two-thirds of the 30,000 suicides reported each year, the AMA says. Nearly two out of three depressed people don’t seek treatment, according to studies by the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.
