CNN reports:
The United States, which has nearly 40,000 military personnel in Japan, has ordered a flotilla including two aircraft carriers and support ships to the region to provide aid. Mr Obama offered condolences in a telephone call to Japan’s Prime Minister Naoto Kan and promised ‘whatever assistance is needed’.
Hundreds were dead or missing in Japan following Friday’s 8.9 magnitude earthquake — the largest in Japan’s history — and the accompanying tsunami.
