If you’re a football fanatic like many in this country have become in the past 15-20 years, the thought of extending the NFL regular season from 16 to 18 games, seems like a simple case of making a good thing even better. Mix in the speculation that those two extra games would come at the expense of the NFL preseason, which of course has been kicked and batted around almost as much as the ever popular Bowl Championship Series, but this could quickly qualify as the greatest decision in NFL history.

On the flip side of this equation, there is the possibly of pushing back the Super Bowl several weeks because of the extension of two more weeks of the season. Most sports fans would have no problem with that because the winter months are so cold that football is the only thing that fans have to look forward too. Sure there’s regular season basketball in the frigid winter months, but if television ratings have told us anything, football is truly the cash cow.

Other major problem that could arise includes issues for season ticket holders. With the loss of two preseason games for two regular season games, would there be an increase on the price of those two extra regular season games? Shoot, aren’t fans getting charged enough for two home preseason games as it stands now? The biggest issue with the possible extension of the NFL season from 16 to 18 regular season games is what it does to the players. They already believe that they play enough, and the extra games have the potential to have a brutal effect on their bodies, and long term, their careers. Fans like the idea of the season be extended, but in retrospect the other factors of ticket sales and overall health of the players should be considered more important. The ball is now in the NFL’s court, and it should be interesting to see when and if a decision ever comes in regards to the length of the season for America’s most popular sport.
