There has been speculation this offseason that Vikings running back Adrian Peterson isn’t happy with his contract and that might be one reason he stayed away from the team’s three-day minicamp in June.
Peterson hadn’t commented on the issue until he was stopped on the red carpet Wednesday night while entering the ESPY awards in Los Angeles. Asked by an NFL Network reporter if the rumors about him being unhappy with his contract could be put to rest, Peterson said, “You can put them to rest.”
That was the only question Peterson was asked about his contract, which in reality has two years left on it because the final season (2012) is going to void. Peterson will make at least around $7 million this season and then between $11 million and $13 million in 2011, depending on how many escalator clauses he reaches.
Peterson should have no complaints about the money but the career span of running backs isn’t very long and Peterson certainly would like to lock into more guaranteed money as soon as possible.
In the interview, Peterson also continued to voice optimism that Brett Favre will return and recently told Saints quarterback Drew Brees, “Get ready for this defeat we’re about to hand you guys [on Sept. 9].”
