Panel says no to outside audit

(Indianapolis) – Republicans on Wednesday turned down a request from Democrats for an independent audit after $320 million was found in an overlooked corporate income account. Governor Mitch Daniels announced last week that a coding error was the cause of the money being placed from the corporate account into a holding account. A budget committee voted 3-2 along party lines to reject the request, though Republicans said the issue could be revisited after more is learned about the mistake. Democrats raised concerns over how the error happened and believe the public’s confidence in the Department of Revenue has been damaged. The committee has asked the State Board of Accounts to begin an audit.
