Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman, NAACP National Board of Directors, who presented Hughes with the award, released the following statement detailing the many reasons why Hughes is a worthy recipient:

I am thrilled to offer Cathy Hughes the NAACP Chairman’s Award,” stated Chairman Brock. “This recognition is long overdue for her accomplishments as a trailblazer in the media industry.  As the founder of Radio One and TV One, an advocate for small business entrepreneurship, and philanthropist. Cathy Hughes reminds us that collectively and as individuals, we can make a difference.  Her presence at the Image Awards continues the NAACP’s quest to celebrate and uplift individuals who model principles of hard work, perseverance and community empowerment.”

AARP CEO A. Barry Rand, who also presented Hughes with the award along with Brock, was equally enthusiastic about her selection:

On behalf of AARP’s millions of members, I am honored to join Roslyn Brock in presenting the 2012 NAACP Chairman’s Award to Cathy Hughes,” he said. “AARP is pleased to be a part of the NAACP Image Awards and we applaud its long-standing commitment to recognizing the achievements of African Americans and all multicultural communities.”

Former New York State Governor David A. Paterson, City of Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Rev. Al Sharpton attended the event among other luminaries.

The first-ever viewing event will be taped on Friday, February 17, 6:45 pm — 7:15 pm and broadcast at 8:00 — 10:00 PM ET on NBC.
