Pope Francis made the initial appearance for his Inaugural Mass on board the Popemobile, as he greeted the thousands of pilgrims that flocked to St. Peter’s Square to see him officially take over the reins of the Vatican.

The Popemobile took Pope Francis across the Square for a relatively short ride, amid loud applause and cheering from the faithful. It intensified when the Pope asked the driver to stop before a disabled man. He got off and walked to the man to give him his blessing, among “thank yous.” After 20 minutes, he retured to the Basilica to prepare for the start of the ceremony.
