Gospel music great and Grammy Award winner, Donnie McClurkin, was recently mentioned by Young Money rapper Nicki Minaj during a live American Idol broadcast. During the Perfecting Faith Church pastor’s March 25 appearance on Good Day NY, he reacted to her commentary.

“That’s amazing,” said McClurkin, who will be headlining this year’s McDonald’s Gospelfest concert at Newark, NJ’s Prudential Center on May 11.

“The Twitter account went crazy and everybody started telling me, ‘Did you hear what Nicki said?’”

What she said was addressed to 24-year-old now-eliminated American Idol gospel-singing contestant, Curtis Finch Jr. after a stirring performance.

Finch, who is a big Shirley Caesar fan, recently met the 74-year-old on the set of Good Day LA.

“I really, really, really hope and pray that you make that kind of an album,” said Nicki, admonishing Finch to stick to his gospel roots.

She continued, “People need that right now. People are out here hurt. People are hurting. We need that and I’m telling you, like, [stay] on some Donnie McClurkin type of [vibe], like I just want you to stay there Curtis. Don’t try to do the R&B stuff…because this is what we need from you.”

Flattered by the mention, McClurkin returned kind words to Nicki.

“She is a wonderful young woman, creative young woman,” he said, “and really, she’s the only honest judge on the whole show.”
