Both Donnie McClurkin and Marvin Sapp are well-loved, award-winning gospel recording artists.
While, for some, the similarities stop there, one woman apparently thinks the two singing preachers look and sound enough alike to mistake one for the other.
Over the weekend, a blatant mix-up occurred.
“Woman sat down@ my table & wept telling me how she was suicidal & my song “NEVER WOULD’VE MADE IT” got her thru.. Sorry @marvin sapp lol,” tweeted McClurkin, the Freeport, NY Perfecting Faith Church pastor.
In 2012, the two identity-swapped men along with Kirk Franklin and Israel Houghton—four of gospel’s most successful artists—participated in the historic 15-city “The King’s Men” gospel tour, sponsored by Live Nation.
Perhaps, being prominently displayed in ads together and sharing major concert stages across the U.S. resulted in Sapp’s mega gospel hit being wrongly attributed to McClurkin.
So then, how did the “Stand” and “We Fall Down” singer handle the musical faux pas?
“I prayed w/her and listened & she hugged me & walked away singing the song!” McClurkin tweeted, recognizing that it was most important to focus on ministry, not accuracy.
He ended by noting that it’s all one Kingdom, adding he was “proud” to know Sapp and “be associated” with him in music and ministry, as long as someone’s “life was touched.”
