Robert Downey Jr. sees an Oscar in his future — even if he has to wait for years — and sees himself as one of the best actors in a not-so-fabulous generation of actors, he told GQ magazine for its May cover story.

Asked about his confidence in his acting abilities, Downey told the magazine, “I’m probably one of the best. …But it’s not that big a deal. It’s not like this is the greatest swath or generation of actors that has ever come down the pike.”

As far as an Academy Award, Downey allows that he “couldn’t care less” if he wins one, but he does think it’ll happen some day.

“Well, I know it’s going to happen,” he says. “That’s just a fact. … Look, even if I don’t get one directly, eventually they’re just going to have to give me one when I get old. So no matter how you slice it, I’m getting one.”

Downey also spoke to the magazine about how he went all-out to earn the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man, despite the fact that the superhero was not exactly of Superman or Batman level A-list fame.

“Right before the first take (of the audition) I felt like I almost left my body—a sudden surge of nerves,” he told the magazine. “Then, all of a sudden, it was like coasting downhill on an old Schwinn Cruiser, like I could do no wrong.”

The May issue of GQ will be available April 23. “Iron Man 3” opens May 3.
