The signing of nine undrafted rookie free agents meant the Indianapolis Colts had to release three players Tuesday — running back Alvester Alexander, fullback Robert Hughes and linebacker Shawn Loiseau.

NFL rules mandate rosters be at 90 players, including the rookie class and undrafted free agents.

Hughes had the most playing time of the three released, appearing in five games with one start last season. He had one 5-yard rush and a 3-yard reception.

Alexander spent time on the Colts’ and Tennessee Titans’ practice squads last season before he signed a reserve/future contract with the Colts in January.

Loiseau joined the Colts’ practice squad last November, then also signed a reserve/future contract.

A Colts release announced the free agent rookie signings of Boston College offensive tackle Emmett Cleary, Lindenwood running back Denodus O’Bryant, UCLA cornerback Sheldon Price, Wagner linebacker C.O. Prime, Idaho State wide receiver Rodrick Rumble, Temple kicker Brandon McManus, Montana fullback Dan Moore, Baylor wide receiver Lanear Sampson and San Houston State cornerback Daxton Swanson.
