Arrests Rise at This Years Indy 500

Officers with the Indiana State Excise Police arrested 181 people on 214 charges in and around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this past weekend. The majority of those arrested were charged in connection with alcohol or drug-related offenses, and most of the arrests were made during Carb Day and the night before the race along Georgetown Road.

Police said This year’s numbers were up from last year when excise officers only issued 125 tickets.

 

Car Crash Injures Child and Adult

A single-vehicle crash, critically injured an adult and a child in Grant County on Saturday evening. Officials said their SUV was traveling westbound on U.S. 35 when it drove off the road, went through grass, struck a gravel roadway and then flew 95 feet in the air…before The vehicle came down and rolled several times.

Authorities said, An 11-year-old child and a 47-year-old adult were taken to Marion General Hospital.

 

Teen Injured After Jumping From Window

A teenager was slightly injured when a fire broke out in her mother’s apartment on the city’s southeast side Sunday afternoon. The 16-year-old girl was home alone and encountered heavy smoke on the second floor so she climbed out the window, authorities said. A IFD Spokesman said She was slightly injured when she hung by her hands and dropped onto the grass.

The damage is estimated to be $35,000.

 

Governor Pence Asks Flags to Fly at Half-Staff 

Gov. Mike Pence is directing flags at state facilities across Indiana be flown at half-staff this memorial day from sunrise until noon. Pence also asks businesses and residents to lower their flags to half-staff to pay tribute to the men and women who have died defending America.

Pence, joined by first lady Karen Pence, and will offer remarks at a Memorial Day program in Bloomington on this morning. The governor also will offer remarks at the 145th annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Crown Hill Cemetery this afternoon.

 

Fire Burns Beech Grove Apartment

A Beech Grove apartment building was evacuated early this morning after a fire sparked on the top floor. The fire was reported just after midnight at the Century Apartments near Albany Street and 5th Avenue. Residents living in two units were displaced from their homes.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

 

Pacers Lose to Miami in Game 3

The Pacers will try Tuesday night to re-tie up the Eastern Conference finals.  The Blue and Gold lost Sunday night to the Miami Heat 114-to-96.  Game Four is at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

 

Kanaan Wins 2013 Indianapolis 500

Tony Kanaan is celebrating his first win at the Indianapolis 500.  He won under a yellow flag after Dario Franchitti crashed with just three laps to go.  Holding back tears, Kanaan said the win was for his fans and for his dad.

 

Indianapolis Falls to 13th Largest City

Indianapolis has slipped one spot among the nation’s most populous cities from Number 12 to No. 13.

Indy’s population stood just under 835,000. The city actually grew by about 8,000 people from the previous year, but other cities grew more. Austin, Texas, moved up from 13th to 11th, pushing Jacksonville, Fla., and Indianapolis each down a spot.
