An electric transportation industry association has announced it will hold its 2014 conference in Indianapolis.

The Electric Drive Transportation Association will for the first time since 2008 uproot its annual Washington, D.C., conference and move it to Indianapolis next May.

The three-day event is expected to attract more than 1,200 attendees and will generate an estimated $1 million for the local economy, said Marc Lotter, a spokesman for the mayor’s office.

The announcement comes only a day after it was officially revealed that a French company that runs a large-scale car-sharing service in Paris will launch a $35 million electric-vehicle service in Indianapolis.

“This is even broader in terms of exposing Indianapolis and putting Indy’s name on the map as a global leader in the drive to transition away from oil in our transportation sectors,” Lotter said of the national conference.

The service, which is expected to break ground shortly before the EDTA conference, is being billed as the largest all-electric car-sharing program in the U.S. The system will include a 500-car fleet and 1,200 charging stations in up to 200 locations across the area.

The conference promotes public programming and education about electric cars and facilitates networking among industry leaders.
