In 2011, McDonald’s Gospelfest presented The Mighty Men of Valor — an event that brought together some  of the biggest male artists in modern devotional music, including Kirk Franklin, Bishop Hezekiah Walker, Marvin Sapp, and Donnie McClurkin, to the Prudential Center in Newark. It was a landmark event that begged for a sequel — and, according to organizer A. Curtis Farrow, that begging did not go unheard

“Once we did that,” says Farrow, “everybody said ‘you’ve done the men, now when are you going to do the women?’”

Those prayers have been answered. The 2014 version of Gospelfest will be dedicated to “The Women Who Worship” — a multi-generational gathering of many of the style’s most popular female artists. Shirley Caesar, Vickie Winans, CeCe Winans, The Clark Sisters, Dorothy Norwood, Kim Burrell, Yolanda Adams, Dottie Peoples, and Tramaine Hawkins will join Newark singers Cissy Houston and Melba Moore on the Prudential Center stage. For Caesar, it’s a return to Gospelfest after headlining the 2012 event. The show will be held, suitably, on Mother’s Day — May 10. Tickets for Gospelfest 2014 will go on sale to the general public on Dec. 20.

The announcement comes during a spike in high-profile gospel activity in Newark. (Everyday gospel activity happens at services in churches all over town.) In late September, Stevie Wonder, Darlene Love, and others sang at New Hope Gospel Church on Sussex Ave. to celebrate Cissy Houston’s 80th birthday. Kirk Franklin recently captivated a full house at NJPAC; in coming months, Walker and former Gospelfest attraction Mary Mary will also play at the Performing Arts Center.
