kids-snow-getty FROSTBITE WARNINGExtreme Cold Poses Serious Health Risks

The bitter cold is hanging on for at least another day or two throughout much of the country, including right here in Central Indiana where we are under a Wind Chill Warning. High temperatures in some areas are expected to remain in the single digits Tuesday, for Indianapolis that’s somewhere around one degree, but it may be lower in other areas.

This cold weather forecast and reality has health experts reminding people that unprotected skin can be easily frostbitten in as little as five minutes. Frostbite begins with numbness or tingling and progresses to a loss of feeling in the affected areas. The feet, hands, and face are the most susceptible to frostbite.

So what in reality is a snow-day at home from school for area kids should not become a day of playing outside in the snow. Pets also need special care in the cold and should be brought inside. Despite a relaxing on travel restrictions in the metro area, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard advises people to stay home, if they can, and stay out of these frigid temperatures. ###
