Gospel music legend Andrae Crouch died on Thursday afternoon after suffering a brief illness. With more than 50 years in music as a songwriter, singer and a choir director, he was hospitalized on Saturday after suffering a heart attack in Los Angeles.  

Crouch was known for hits such as Soon and Very Soon and The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power .  He was also highly sought after as a musical collaborator on projects with mainstream singers and musicians ranging from Michael Jackson to Madonna to Paul Simon.

His work over an exhaustive career garnered him five Grammy Awards and an Oscar for his work on the film The Color Purple. Crouch was age 72.
