Boko Haram Attacks

A man injured in a suicide blast is transported at the General Hospital in northeast Nigerian town of Potiskum on January 12, 2015. Four people were killed and 46 injured when two female suicide bombers detonated their explosives outside a mobile phone market in the town on January 11, 2015. Although no one claimed responsibility the attacks bore the hallmark of Boko Haram Islamists who have been increasingly using female suicide bombers in their armed campaign to establish a hardline Islamic state. Just days after waging a deadly attack in Nigeria using 10-year-old female suicide bombers, Boko Haram fighters on Monday attacked a military base in the northwest Cameroonian city of Kolofata, Al Jazeera reports.

Monday’s attack comes after suicide bombings occurred at an open market selling mobile handsets in the town of Potiskum, in Yobe state, one of three Nigerian states after Adamawa and Borno that have been struck by Boko Haram.

Al Jazeera reports about Sunday’s assault, which involved young girls:

A trader at the market said the bombers were about 10 years old.

“I saw their dead bodies. They are two young girls of about 10 years of age … you only see the plaited hair and part of the upper torso,” he said.

The town was hit by a suicide bomber in November when at least 48 people, mainly students, were killed during a school assembly.

Boko Haram’s march toward reviving the caliphate — how Muslims organized themselves for centuries after the death of the Prophet Mohammed — has not come without a heavy death toll, the news site reports:

Boko Haram is also suspected of using a 10-year-old girl to detonate a bomb at a market in Maiduguri on Saturday, killing at least 10 people and seriously injuring others. The bomb exploded after explosives were found under the girl’s clothing during a search, according to witness accounts.

Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, lies in the heartland of the Boko Haram revolution and is often struck by bomb attacks:

Meanwhile, survivors of a separate Boko Haram assault that may have killed up to 2,000 people described days of relentless violence in which, one witness said, some people were slaughtered “like insects.”

The accounts, reported by Nigeria’s Premium Times newspaper, were given by villagers who fled the carnage in and around Baga, a town in Borno state that lies in the northeastern corner of Nigeria near the border with Chad. The killing unfolded over several days after Boko Haram fighters seized a key military base there on Jan. 3.

The Nigerian military said in a statement that 14 soldiers were killed and 30 were wounded in the Baga attack, and that it was making a plan to bring “law, order, and normalcy” to the town again.

Nigeria’s inability to squash the movement may harm President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election efforts. Boko Haram, which says it opposes Western influence, has been fighting since 2009 to establish its own state in Nigeria’s northeast quadrant.
