“You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
-Genesis 3:4-6

It is human nature to desire what we shouldn’t. We could have more than enough, and still want the part that is being kept from us (that is what happened in the Garden of Eden). But have you ever wondered why? Why do we want what we can’t have? Why are we so curious? Why do we crave the forbidden?

While it is an aspect of our sin nature to be hungry for what is restricted, the reason is probably different than you would think.

Our problem with the forbidden is not a problem with lust, but rather a problem with trust. What got Adam and Eve in trouble wasn’t so much the fruit itself. It was the fact that they didn’t believe, and because they didn’t believe, they couldn’t obey. They didn’t trust God.

In that moment in the Garden, the forbidden’s lie became more real to them than God’s truth. And by embracing the lie, they made God (in their eyes) a liar. Their crisis wasn’t about fruit, but about faith.

Thankfully, we can learn from their (and our) mistakes and choose a different path.

Faith in God means I trust God no matter what.

Fath in God means I trust God enough to believe what He says. If He says that this fruit (forbidden fruit can take on many forms) will kill me, hurt me, and destroy my life then I will believe Him.

I will reject the soft whisper of deception that says, “…Oh it is okay. One time won’t bother you at all!”

I will have faith in the word of God.

I will have faith in the plan of God.

I will have faith in the timing of God.

I will have faith in the character of God.

I will trust Him.

Scripture Of The Day: “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)
